As a matter of necessity, Universities in Nigeria should consider unbundling Computer Science discipline into its emerging specialist fields; Cybersecurity, Software Security, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, Computer Networks, Web Application Development, Data Science, Computer Programming, Database Programming, Computer Forensics, etc.
It has become imperative that a curriculum refined to deliver targeted learning outcomes for each of the respective Computer Science disciplines be developed by the National University Commission (NUC) in collaboration with the Universities and industry Stakeholders.
Computer Science is a very vast and dynamic discipline, and considering the evolving advancement made in the field, there is an urgent need for players within the computing industry to appropriately design a study curriculum tailored to produce professionals with at least baseline knowledge for career development.
The curriculum should be designed in such a manner that it encompasses structured and stackable learning, devoid of ambiguities.
There are millions of Computer Science graduates from Nigerian universities who are afraid to mention they studied Computer Science because they could not prove it in practical terms. If not for personal development and determination, it would have been difficult for me, except that I decided to create a niche for myself. It is advisable from the onset that a learner choose an area that interests him or her and pursue its foundation from the very beginning. Trying to learn so many concepts at once is diversionary.
In Conclusion:
Unbundling Computer Science will encourage dedicated learning outcomes and professional development for prospective learners.
