He is a member of the British Computer Society (BCS), the Chartered Institute of Administration of Nigeria (CIA), the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), etc.

My journey to becoming a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) began in November 2019 with a LinkedIn Learning preparatory course covering the 8 domains:

  1. Security and Risk Management: Focuses on risk analysis, legal regulations, and security policies.
  2. Asset Security: Involves protection of physical and digital assets.
  3. Security Architecture and Engineering: Covers secure design principles.
  4. Communication and Network Security: Deals with securing network architecture.
  5. Identity and Access Management: Ensures proper identification and authentication
  6. Security Assessment and Testing: Involves evaluating security controls.
  7. Security Operations: Focuses on incident management and operational procedures.
  8. Software Development Security: Ensures secure software development practices.

For 5 years, I have been studying for this certification. It took me that long because of three reasons:

  1. The cost of the test (749 USD, N1.1 million in Nigerian Naira).
  2. Cost of learning materials (including eBooks, Test-prep exams, hardcopy books. (500 USD, N780,000 in Nigerian Naira).
  3. Test-taking Logistics (N500,000)
Provisional Statement of passing CISSP

CISSP is not just a common Information Security Certification, but the gold standard in the information security realm. CISSP certification validates an IT security professional’s expertise in designing, implementing, and managing cybersecurity programs and infrastructures. It is considered a benchmark in the industry, indicating proficiency in the above-listed 8 domains of #Cybersecurity.

The journey of my Preparation for the CISSP Exam

After the initial investment in the CISSP Prep LinkedIn Learning Course by Mike Chapel, I purchased the Official Study Guide written by Mike at Amazon. I bought Thor Teaches CISSP training course and also subscribed to Pete Zerger’s YouTube channel series on CISSP. This is in addition to other free downloadable e-materials on CISSP.

While the above resources provided valuable insights into my journey, I created a study framework that aligns with my needs.

1. Understanding the Exam Structure: I familiarized myself with the exam format and domains.

2. Creating a Study Plan: I allocated time for each domain based on my strengths and weaknesses.

3. Joining Study Groups: I collaborated with others preparing for the exam.

4. Regular Practice: I consistently practice and review my weak areas.

Each of the CISSP’s domains requires a thorough understanding and application of principles to achieve a passing score.

Challenges Faced

  • Financial Burden: The cost of study materials, online classes, and exam fees was substantial.
  • Time Management: Balancing work, family, and study time requires careful planning and dedication.
  • Staying Motivated: The extensive preparation period sometimes felt overwhelming, but setting small goals helped me stay on track.

In conclusion, achieving CISSP certification is a rigorous but rewarding process. It opens up numerous career opportunities and establishes you as a recognized expert in the field of IT security. The journey, though challenging, is a testament to one’s commitment and passion for cybersecurity. I want to add that my 22 years in active IT practice have been invaluable in the journey.

Last word: Be committed, be focused, and be determined.
